Pedasi is a small town with a population of 2000 people. It is located in Panama, along the southeastern part of the Azuero Peninsula. The village is part of the Pedasi District as well as the Los Santos province. It is known for being a fishing region.
There are several shops, markets and restaurants in the area, but only two bands and one health clinic and library. Telephone, cable and Internet service are available in all parts of the region. This village is known for being lively and hosting yearly carnivals, having multiple beaches and sports fishing, surfing, diving and other water activities. It is near many national parks and preserves.
The land is known for its clean streets and beautiful Spanish colonial-inspired architecture. The town includes a primary road, plaza and several civic facilities that are surrounded by residential properties. The Pedasi reputation is positive, as it is known for being a main attraction in the Los Santos region. The village can be accessed within a five-hour drive from Panama City. There is even a small airstrip that accepts charter and private planes.
There are a dozen nearby beaches. For this reason, many tourists travel to this area looking for water sports and activities. Surfing is a big attraction, especially on the Playa Venao beach. Several beaches are considered good locations for surfers to catch waves. Sport fishing is quite popular in the town. Pelagic game fish are plenty in this region. This is a result of the continental shelf dropping near the shore. Year-round catch includes: sailfish, amberjack, roosterfish, grouper, cubera snapper. Some other seasonal catches: wahoo, bigeye tuna and yellowfin tuna.
From Playa El Arenal people can take a short boat ride over to the island wildlife refuge known as Isla Iguana. The island is surrounded by coral reef and therefore filled with beaches of white sand. Several exotic species of sea turtles, rays, reptiles, rays, fish, and birds are found in this habitat.
Most Pedasi townspeople are considered friendly and laidback. They offer a warm welcome to visitors. Most men wear cuttarras, traditional-style sandals, and folkloric white and black hats. The women, particularly during festivities, wear traditional dresses that are hand stitched and include intricate details.
In the month of February, a yearly carnival is hosted. This is a major event in the local scene. During this time, the town is split into two areas, the upper street, Calle Arriba and the lower street, Calle Abajo. Each of the areas has its own queen whose mission is it to outshine the other queen when it comes to the best display of floats, music and fireworks. Following the celebrations, the winning queen is selected based on the popular vote.
