By Al Bay

Many families are still planning a getaway this summer even when times are hard for them financially. There are ways you can make your getaway a budget-friendly one.

Having the best vacation doesn't mean you should spend more than you can afford. Armed with the right knowledge on where to go and what to do, one will sure enjoy every bit of the vacation.

1. Variety of transportation modes to choose from:

a. By air - flying by plane is perfect for those who would like to spend as little time as possible traveling since this is actually the fastest specially for long distance. However airline tickets just like accommodations on hotel increase during weekends. Book during weekdays to save more and another tip is to pack less unless necessary to bring more. Airlines are charging extra on baggage.

b. By sea - traveling by sea is actually best left to those with tough stomach who can endure the rough waters. Although it is also nice to travel by sea if you want to enjoy the scenery.

c. By train - another fast way to go around from one city to another. Purchasing Rail Pass can also help you save some.

d. By bus - the best and most affordable way of traveling from one place to another. This is if you don't mind sitting for some time.

2. Where to stay during vacation is probably the toughest decision. If you think that hotels and cheap motels are your only option, then read for alternatives:

a. Campsite - this is ideal if you are an outdoorsy type person or you feel much better amongst the tree nature. There are those public sites like those in the National Park of very state wherein the rent is within everyone's budget. There are those private campsites that offer more services like use of hot water and a Laundromat.

b. School dormitories - During summer breaks contact school housing office to see if they are renting their dorms to tourist.

c. YMCA/YWCA - an expensive yet very comfortable accommodation choice.

d. Youth/Elder Hostels - By far this is the cheapest option available to tourist. With hot shower and complimentary breakfast, this is surely one of the best options for those budget friendly travel plans.

3. It is true that all tourists go to souvenir shops to purchase those special gifts. These shops tend to sell things at a higher rate. So if you are looking for ways to shop and yet get all the things you want, try raiding local malls.

With a new way to look at how to travel at one's convenience without overspending, one will definitely enjoy their vacation.
