Want a Custom Benchmade "Griptilian" or "Mini Griptilian?"

In my last post I discussed how much I love orange knives. Love 'em. I commented that I wish more knife companies produced orange scaled knives. Especially Benchmade. I would absolutely love a Benchmade "Mini Griptilian" in orange. Not to mention in a few other blade and steel types.

Well.......I must be living under a rock.

I woke up this morning and the first comment on my recent video (on YouTube) was by a user saying "just fyi mini grips come in whatever color you want. the benchmade website now has a custom tab!!!!"

What? When? Are you serious?! Hold the bloody phone this was news to me!

Now I've browsed the Benchmade site quite a few thousand times and in depth, but I never knew they did this. So I went back to the page and scoured it for at least an hour. Finally on their homepage under the "Services" tab they offer "Customize a Griptilian." Sweet tap dancing Jesus, I said.

The prices are excellent, by the way. $125 And $115 for the Griptilian and Mini Griptilian respectively. That price includes your choice of the following without additional fees...
  • Color Scales (You can actually get mismatched colors if you want!). Coyote, OD Green, Yellow, Light Blue, Pink, Orange (Yes!), Purple, Royal Blue and Black.
  • Plain or Half Serrated Edge.
  • Your choice of Drop Point, Tanto or Sheep's Foot.
  • 154CM Steel. (Additional Steels are offered at a modest cost. D2 $15, N680 $15 and SV30 $20).
  • Axis Lock, Liner & Screw Colors. Your choice is either silver or black. You can mismatch these if you wish.
  • Your choice of clip designs. Standard Black Enamel, Black Oxide, Split Arrow Silver, Split Arrow Black Oxide or no clip.
  • You can also have a laser etched image and text inserted on both sides of the blade.
Amazing! You can basically create more than a dozen variations (So long as you select 154CM Steel) for a flat price of $125 and $115. That's in-freaking-credible. At the most you'll only shell out $145 if you select the Griptilian with SV30 Steel and $135 for the Mini Griptilian. That's pretty incredible for a knife of this quality. But of course these are custom. Currently they're only available in the U.S. and Canada. The manufacture and ship time is 3-4 weeks. Tough, but fair.

But still. For $140+S&H you can make an orange Griptilian with a half-serrated sheep's foot blade made of N680 (Similar to Spyderco's H1 Steel & Benchmade's X15. Salt Water Resistance.) and high visibility stainless steel silver pocket clip as a rescue knife. Take a look for yourself....

You can find the "Build a Grip" page here.

I gotta go find my credit card.....

I saw a few reviews online of this service, PJ. Apparently it's filled with bugs and run by only one guy named "Ryan."

I'll give it a shot, though.

I did not know that!

Thanks for the 411.

There's apparently going to be more models in the coming year. The company said they decided to go ahead with the custom option because it cost no more than assembling a standard Griptilian.

Keep up posted on how it works. I would LOVE to be able to order a custom Grip.
